This was the fourth time I entered the race in consecutive years and Isit here a little sore but glad to say I have finished all. This year I traveled over from Orange, NSW, on Thursday and stayed with Brett Hayden and his wife.
Friday saw the usual last minute setups and fiddling but by Saturday I was really excited. I was actually looking forward to some hard weather conditions and before the race it was great to catch up with other riders who I have met during the four years. I spoke with Chris Power who I met the first year I rode and he too has only great things to say about this event.
The event got underway and I loved the tracks and the guys around my minute were a great group. Todd Casey, who was just behind me was a real character and I really enjoyed his enthusiasm. The first lap was great and with only one off, I was happy going into the night.
In the next two laps the rain started and the conditions varied greatly between the tests from mud to bulldust. The riders seem to stretch out during the night with a few out and some losing time. Todd came in to the main control and had obviously had a big off, with his helmet peak split in two and his light dangling in the breeze. He battled on but his light gave up and he was out. I loved the crowd near the bog hole on the raceway test. I roared through and the cheer was louder than my bike at full noise. The weather was great as although wet it wasn’t cold. I completed the fourth lap with energy and charged as hard as the body would permit. The tests all had their spots that could bring you unstuck and oftenyou had to slow down to go fast.Finishing the 24 is an achievement that I always see as the goal, not the placing.
This is without doubt the best event in Australia. So once again, Well done South Australia.
Thanks Brad for taking the time to comment
